A Night Out In Raleigh With Local Band Enemies & Allies
Everyone knows all the big artists. You hear the name Taylor Swift or Kiss and automatically know their songs and music. But every single one of them had to start somewhere. Nirvana started in their garage as did The Ramones, and look at how those careers went. However, how often are we able to get those tickets to the big-name shows without having to spend a pretty penny for it? Is it still worth it, most people will answer yes to that question. Could you imagine seeing those big-name artists before they were big? Something that could bring the same enjoyment and help kick off a musician's career, and gives you the chance to say "I saw them before" is getting out in your area and seeing some good local music. Which is exactly what I was able to do the other night.
There is always something so exciting about seeing a new artist for the first time. That was exactly the feeling I had as I made the drive to Raleigh, NC. As I pulled into the venue the excitement was at an all-time high thinking about how extraordinary this night was going to be. It was also the first time I was getting to go to this venue. Chapel of Bones was as unique a venue as I could have asked for! The gothic design set the stage for the metal music I couldn't wait to hear. I, also, was in love with the design choice they made when I saw there were pews for seating. The aesthetic of the venue was flawless, but their drink choices stood out even more. Not only was there a full bar, but they also had gourmet coffee! I cannot tell you how refreshing it was to be in a venue that can reach a wide range of people with their drink choices. Chapel of Bones is definitely an establishment not only for some good local metal music; but for an outstanding time to spend with friends.
Once I was done reveling in the ambiance of the venue, the opening bands began to play their sets. Lo was up first, followed by Cadaver Delende, then Defile the Crown, and fourth in the lineup was Mourning Lotus. I know I was excited for Enemies & Allies, but these bands amped up my excitement and were exhilarating to watch. All these bands hit the stage with a passion for their music that every person could feel. You could tell from the moshing and headbanging that the bands were doing their jobs to get everyone as hyped as can be for the headliner.
After four insanely skilled sets, it was the moment that I was beyond thrilled for. Enemies & Allies, an American metalcore band from Charlotte, NC, was headed to take the stage. As lead singer Kyle Nesslinger stepped up and the downbeat hit I was hooked. The crowd was electrified with energy as they moved through their set. The powerful rhythm of the drums, with the sonic power of the guitar and bass blended with the commanding vocals, bewitched every person in attendance. Not only did we get to hear originals filled with a beautiful mixture of guttural and melodic vocals, the band threw in some covers of "Faint" and "Running Up That Hill". Both covers were done in a way that elevated them to fit in with other songs so it felt like a cohesive mesh of popular songs with originals. It can sometimes feel forced when bands throw in cover songs to their sets but I think Enemies & Allies used their creative talents to make you feel like they have always been performing those songs.
Unfortunately, the end of the night had to come, but I left the venue with an even deeper love of metal music. All the bands came together to create a memorable night and showcase how incredible local music is. I highly suggest catching any of these bands out at a local show and following them so you can keep up with their tour dates and music!
